In China, power outlets provide 220V electricity. Make sure to have plug adapters and a voltage converter. Contact the manufacturer to find out your device's electricity requirements, especially for computers or important electrical devices. If unsure, always use a voltage converter to avoid malfunction or electrical fire.
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou) offers free high-speed wireless internet service throughout the academic buildings and dorm.
Cell phones that take SIM cards can generally be used in China if they have been unlocked, but you should check with your carrier and the phone manufacturer before arriving. You should not retain your non-Chinese phone plan for use in China as fees for international roaming are extraordinarily high. You can buy a local SIM card after your arrival on campus.
Online payment is extremely popular in China. Download WeChat and Alipay, and link your international bank cards to pay like a local.
