DISCOVERING CHINA | Citywalk in Liwan

13 Oct 2024

ISA organized a citywalk activity on October 13, focusing on exploring the cultural gems of Liwan District in Guangzhou. Liwan District, commonly known as Xiguan, got its name Lixhi Wan because red litchis grow on both banks of the river. As one of the three old urban areas of Guangzhou, Liwan District has well preserved the Lingnan cultural features and old commercial blocks.

The group of international students and students from Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan embarked on a journey to visit Shamian Island, known for its European style architecture and tranquil atmosphere.

They then proceeded to the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall, a magnificent example of traditional Lingnan architecture and a signifcant cultural heritage site. The seven unique techniques of Lingnan, represented by wood carving, brick carving, stone carving, pottery sculpture, Huisu (a traditional sculptureart in Guangzhou), copper and iron casting and colored painting, have been fully displayed there.

The evening concluded with a stroll through Yongqing Fang, where the students marveled at the vibrant night lights and indulged in sampling authentic Lingnan delicacies.

The citywalk activity provided a unique opportunity for students to immerse themselves in the rich history and diverse cultural heritage of Guangzhou's Liwan District.
