CULTURE DAY | Celebrate the Lantern Festival, Enjoy the Reunion!

24 Feb 2024

The 15th day of the first lunar month is a traditional festival in China, the Lantern Festival, also known as Yuanxiao Festival. With the aim to celebrate Chinese Lantern Festival and promote cultural exchange between Chinese and international students, ISA hold an activity “Culture Day | Celebrate the Lantern Festival, Enjoy the reunion!“ on February 24th, 2024.

During the event, Qiushi Liang, a PhD student, provided a historical overview of the Chinese Lantern Festival and introduced the customs associated with the day. One of the key traditions of the Lantern Festival is the consumption of small dumpling balls made from glutinous rice flour, known as Yuan Xiao or Tang Yuan. These dumplings, round in shape and filled with sweet or savory fillings, symbolize family unity, completeness, and happiness.

Students from different cultural backgrounds learned how to make the traditional Chinese glutinous rice dumplings. Under the guidance of experienced chef, the students rolled the dough, filled it with sweet fillings, and shaped the yuanxiao into perfect round balls. This hands-on experience not only allowed the students to learn about Chinese culinary traditions, but also provided them with an opportunity to bond and collaborate with one another.

After the yuanxiao making session, students gathered for a dinner and watched the Lantern Festival Gala.

International students immersed themselves in Chinese culture and traditions during Culture Day, while Chinese students shared their heritage with peers from around the world. The Lantern Festival celebration brought students together, fostering cross-cultural understanding, friendship, and creating lasting memories. Festive music filled the air, creating an atmosphere of unity and togetherness at the university.
