Celebrating Chinese New Year Through Global Eyes

26 Feb 2026

As the world celebrated the Lunar New Year, a time filled with vibrant traditions and heartfelt reunions, five of our international students took the initiative to share their unique and personal experiences during this festive season. Each story offers a glimpse into how they embraced the cultural richness of the Spring Festival, whether through participating in local customs, enjoying traditional foods, or reflecting on their own diverse backgrounds. Their narratives not only highlight the universal themes of family and renewal but also showcase the beauty of cultural exchange and personal growth. Join us as we explore their captivating stories and celebrate the diversity of experiences that the Lunar New Year brings.

"My Lunar New Year journey was a breathtaking transition from nature’s wonders to the heart of the celebration. I began in Zhangjiajie, climbing the stairs to the iconic Heaven’s Gate, exploring the magnificent 72 Deserts (72 Strange Buildings), and finally standing in awe before the Hallelujah Mountains that inspired Avatar. The magic continued as I returned to Guangzhou! Together with my family and friends, we immersed ourselves in the local traditions: wandering through the vibrant Flower Markets, tasting authentic Cantonese festive delicacies, and watching the night sky explode with fireworks. Celebrating the start of the Year of the Horse surrounded by the people I love was the perfect way to welcome a new chapter."

"Who says you have to be home for the holidays? We spent our Chinese New Year exploring the best of Guangzhou! We kicked things off with traditional temple visits, felt the hospitality of locals through Angpow,  and even squeezed in a birthday cake celebration. Seeing the skyline light up with fireworks while surrounded by friends from all over the world is a memory I’ll keep long after graduation."

"It was an interesting time. I spent the holidays with friends I met here at university. During the vacation, we often went to the city centre to explore the local culture. We visited the flower market and tried some delicious snacks. I also got a poster with the word 'Happiness' on it, which is now hanging on my door as a reminder of this experience."

“Celebrating Chinese New Year in Guangzhou offered a beautiful blend of serene tradition and vibrant modern energy. The day began with a peaceful walk through a historic stone moon gate, where traditional architecture was nestled among lush greenery. As the sun set, the Nansha Marina area buzzed with life, with visitors enjoying the harbor view under the watchful gaze of the Humen Bridge. The festive atmosphere peaked at night as the city skyline ignited in a sea of red. From the neon ‘I ❤️ GZ’ display on Citic Plaza to the shimmering lights of the Canton Tower, the city felt alive with the holiday spirit.”

"Amidst Chinese New Year, I found quiet hope in plum blossom blooming although its an artificial plum it's still light out the atmosphere. The streets burst crimson with lanterns and a graceful qipao-clad mannequin. Then, thunderous drums announced lion dancers weaving through a dazzling mall—a perfect fusion of ancient tradition and modern celebration, capturing the festival's resilient, joyful spirit."
