14 Sep 2026
Guangzhou, September 12, 2026 — Organized by the Global Learning Department (GLD) of The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou), 90 international students and HMT students participated in a one-day field trip to Guangzhou. The activity provided students with an opportunity to explore the city's unique blend of modern urban development, traditional culture, and historical heritage while building connections with fellow students from different backgrounds.
Discovering the Modern Heart of Guangzhou
The first stop of the trip was Huacheng Square, often regarded as the city's central urban plaza. Surrounded by some of Guangzhou's most recognizable skyscrapers, the square offered students a glimpse into the city's rapid modernization and economic development.
Students walked through the area, admired the contemporary architecture, and learned about Guangzhou's role as one of China's major economic and cultural centers.

Exploring the Historic Streets of Beijing Road
The group then headed to Beijing Road Pedestrian Street, one of Guangzhou's most famous commercial and cultural districts. Here, students experienced the city's lively atmosphere, explored local restaurants and shops, and enjoyed free time for lunch.
In addition to modern retail stores, students also discovered the historical layers preserved beneath the street, which reflect Guangzhou's long history as an important trading city.

An unexpected event happened during lunch time at Beijing Road. A group of international students planed a surprising birthday party for Kessara from Thailand. It truly showed how warm-hearted and creative our international students are in HKUST(GZ).

Experiencing Traditional Cantonese Culture at Yongqing Fang
In the afternoon, the group visited Yongqing Fang, a cultural district known for its restored Lingnan-style architecture and creative cultural spaces.
As they strolled through the historic neighborhood, students learned about local traditions and observed how old buildings have been revitalized while preserving their cultural significance.

A Walk Through History on Shamian Island
The final destination of the trip was Shamian Island, a historically significant area famous for its tree-lined streets and distinctive architecture.
While walking through the island, students learned about Guangzhou's historical connections with the international community and observed the unique architectural styles preserved in the area.
Many participants described Shamian Island as one of their favorite locations of the day, appreciating its peaceful environment and historical atmosphere.
