• What attracted you to HKUST(GZ) ?

When I was studying in Australia, I was establishing the AR/VR startup company from Sydney. However, Australia was small market size and there is not much research and development for metaverse. I thought that I wanted to get experience for AR/VR R&D from Mphil degree and I tried to find out the good university for supporting startup and R&D to students. I discovered that HKUST was going to open the new campus in Guangzhou and Guangzhou campus will provide many opportunities to the people who want to start the company and have achievements in the inresearch field. So, I decided to study at HKUST(GZ) for my Mphil journey.

• How has your transition to HKUST(GZ) been? What were the easiest and most challenging aspects?

One of the most challenging aspects as an international student is to learn the Chinese language. I tried to learn Chinese by attending good Chinese class which is offered by the university. It was difficult for me to learn about 4 intonations and writing of Chinese characters. However, one of the most easiest aspect is making Chinese friends. Chinese students are so kind and their personality is so nice to me. Also, they take care of me if I have some issues here. This experience and good relationship with Chinese friends would be good property in my life forever. I could not forget  this good experience and I want to keep in touch with my Chinese friends forever.

• Could you share your most memorable experience at HKUST(GZ) so far?

Actually, there are so many memorable moments when I have been studying here. First of all, I really like to play the soccer and I joined the sport club for playing the soccer. First time, I did not know how to join the soccer club, but my Chinese friends who are Alan and Hose Romero invited me to play soccer together. So, I could play the soccer on Wednesday and Sunday. I also attended the football league at HKUST(GZ) and our RBM team won from the league. I could not forget the moment when I made the goal and assisted to be an co-player from Function hub and RBM game. Another good memorable moment is that performing the Band concert for Red bird music festival. I used to play the drum in the band when I was living in South Korea. It was a good experience and I wanted to organize the international band at our school. So, I found the people who want to play the instruments and singing. We practiced almost everyday and perform 2 songs very well. We also have plans to perform the mini concert at the school. This experience will not be forgotten in my life.

• What do you enjoy the most about HKUST(GZ)?

I really enjoyed lots of things from our school and one of the most exciting experience is to make lots of friends and share the different experience and viewpoints depending on their background and life experience. I also enjoy to travel with other people to visit good places in China. 

• If you could offer one piece of advice to a new international student, what would it be?

At HKUST(GZ), you will find a supportive environment to help you achieve your dreams in research, study and life. Come and make your dreams a reality here.

• Are there any interesting stories you would like to share about your experience as an international student at HKUST(GZ)?

I have many interesting experiences as international students. One of the interesting experiences is that Korean people do not pretty much know about the K-pop. However, some Chinese friends are really big fans of the K-pop and they know more than me. I was so surprised that K-pop is so popular in China. Also, many students watch the K-drama and they love it. It's so interesting and I was happy and proud of Korea. ​
