GOGOI GHANIBHUTI

20 Oct 2025

Hello everyone, my name is Ghanibhuti Gogoi. I am from Assam; India and I am an UG 3 student here in HKUST(GZ) majoring in AI.

  • Why HKUST(GZ) and my academic life so far

While applying for my bachelor’s degree, I considered a lot of universities based on many aspects including research output, student support, financial support etc and HKUST GZ really stood strong in all aspects for me. So, I choose HKUST GZ for my bachelor’s study. Even though I wouldn’t disagree that the studies here are tough and challenging, however this university provides us a lot of support and good environment to continue it. My own academic journey has been full of ups and downs however it has played a significant role in making who I am today.

  • My integration with Chinese culture

China and Chinese culture would be a crucial part of me for the rest of my life all thanks to HKUST GZ. It’s in HKUST GZ that I learned how to play Mahjong, Guan Dan, Dou Di Ju, Uno, Poker etc as a part of the Chinese way of socialization. I learned how to enjoy the spring festival as well as other festivals that are celebrated in China. I learned how to say cheers in Chinese and learned Chinese drinking culture. My roommates helped me understand Chinese internet culture and popular memes. On top of that, I made a lot of friends that will last a lifetime for me. Thus, I believe HKUST GZ is a part of my life that has the biggest transformative impact.

  • My achievements and goals

In year 1, I met Professor Gengfa who later came to be the most influential person in my life. Since then, I have built a lot of cool projects with him which gave me a lot of work experience. This is something I consider to be very valuable in my life, and I am proud of it. On top of it, I did participate in HKUST GZ’s UG research program for 2 years and made projects with both Professor Gengfa and Professor Apostolos Rikos.

On top of that, I went to teach kids about English and English Drama at under privileged areas of China for 2 times as of now and it has given me immense joy.

Volunteering to teach kids at underprivileged areas really gave me the sense of community and working for people. I always wanted to give back to the community as a person and HKUST GZ allowed me to achieve the same. I also had the chance to receive the best teacher award. It left a deep impact on my life and taught me about different economic and social situation of people at different places.

Along with that I also joined a singing competition in Nansha District and came at top 8. It was my first experience to get so much exposure in a new country and I really appreciate it.

As my bachelor’s degree is coming to an end, I plan to continue my Masters or PHD here in HKUST GZ or HKUST CWB. If I can secure a job in HK, I would be keener to do that. However, life is unpredictable, and we can only plan but never know what’s gonna happen.

  • My advice for upcoming student

College is a great place to discover yourself and grow as a person. Even though academics is important, it isn’t the sole purpose of it. I recommend everyone to find their own path, stay away from FOMO and enjoy college life as it comes once in a lifetime. My quote of life is “I will never be as young as today”.
