DISCOVERING CHINA | The Art of Pottery
01 Apr 2024Foshan, known for its rich history in ceramic culture, boasts the Shiwan West area as a hub for this traditional art form. Among the many treasures in this area, the Ancient Nanfeng Kiln stands out as a symbol of the city's ceramic industry, with a legacy spanning 500 years. This kiln has not only witnessed the industry's growth and prosperity but has also contributed to the innovative development of Foshan.
In an effort to provide international and HMT students with an opportunity to immerse themselves in the local ceramic culture, appreciate the historical significance of the Ancient Nanfeng Kiln, and learn the art of pottery making, ISA organized this special activity on 31st March.
Pottery making is often lauded for its therapeutic and relaxing qualities. As part of the sightseeing tour, students were able to participate in a pottery making course, where they tried their hand at crafting pottery under the guidance of skilled artisans. While the process may have appeared deceptively simple, the students quickly realized the level of skill and precision required to create items such as bowls, mugs, and saucers. Despite initial struggles, the students thoroughly enjoyed the experience, with many expressing surprise at the level of difficulty involved. One student aptly remarked, "Our eyes may understand the techniques, but our hands struggle to replicate them."
Despite the challenges, the students embraced the opportunity to express their creativity and craft their own unique pottery pieces.
Overall, the activity was a resounding success, with everyone thoroughly enjoying themselves.
