DISCOVERING CHINA | The Art of Pottery
15 Sep 2025Immersing students in the heart of southern Chinese tradition, the Global Learning Department (GLD) organized a vibrant cultural excursion last Saturday. Over 30 international and Hong Kong/Macau/Taiwan students ventured to Foshan's Nanfeng Ancient Kiln, experiencing centuries-old Lingnan culture firsthand through an immersive pottery workshop.
The trip began with a guided exploration of the historic complex. Students marveled at the iconic 500-year-old dragon kilns, understanding their vital role in China’s ceramic legacy as they navigated winding lanes past traditional workshops and ancient architecture within this "living museum of fire." This rich historical context set the stage for deeper engagement.
The core experience unfolded during an intensive hands-on pottery workshop. Under patient instruction from master artisans, participants dove into creation. Laughter mingled with focused concentration throughout the studio as students embraced both successes and inevitable learning moments on their creative journeys.
By fostering direct engagement with profound local traditions like ceramics—a pillar material culture across Asia—the program strengthens bonds between diverse student communities while deepening appreciation for Guangdong province’s intangible treasures.
