Our Dragon Boat Journey in Xiaozhou Village

09 Jun 2026

18 international and HMT students embarked on a cultural journey to the historic waterways of Xiaozhou Village on June 6. The event, designed to immerse students in centuries-old traditions of the Dragon Boat Festival, combined ritual learning with the thrill of dragon boat rowing.

The day began with an introduction to the festival’s customs and significance. Students learned about the symbolic meanings behind wearing five-colored silk threads, hanging fragrant sachets to ward off evil spirits, and dotting realgar wine on the forehead—a traditional practice believed to protect against insects and disease.

The highlight of the event was, without a doubt, the dragon boat experience. Before stepping onto the boat, the students received hands-on training in paddling techniques and how to synchronize their strokes with the rhythmic beat of a drum—a skill essential to dragon boat racing.

They then witnessed the traditional pre-race ceremony, a solemn yet spirited ritual including “dotting the dragon’s eyes” to awaken the boat’s spirit, paying homage to the Dragon God for a safe and fast journey, and setting off firecrackers to drive away bad luck. The air filled with excitement as the firecrackers crackled along the ancient riverbanks.

Once aboard the slender wooden boat, the students paddled along the waterways, taking in the picturesque scenery of Xiaozhou Village. Lush banyan trees, centuries-old houses, and arched stone bridges glided past as the students worked as one team, guided by the beating drum.

Adding to the festive spirit, a group of students from Jinan University also joined the event. The two universities soon turned the ancient canal into a friendly racetrack. Amid cheers and synchronized splashes, the teams raced side by side. Though competition was lighthearted, the passion was real—and unforgettable.

By the end of the day, everyone had gained more than just a new sport. They left with colorful silk threads on their wrists, fragrant sachets in their hands, and a deeper understanding of how Chinese traditions continue to inspire and unite across cultures.
